Digital Business Card vs Inquiry Engine

A digital card is address and phone. An inquiry engine has positioning, product compare, evidence, and a followable path. Different goals mean different nav and acceptance.

Many failed site projects fail on acceptance: the owner thinks “it opens and has a logo” is done. That is a digital card. An inquiry engine is accepted when a stranger can decide on the site and leave a followable lead.

Digital-card mode

About, honor wall, a leader letter, Contact. Products get three large photos. No compare, no files, no form — or the form hides at the bottom of Contact.

It can fill “website required on the bid.” It cannot satisfy “sales wants the buyer to understand before they ask.” See Why Business Cards and Moments Make Lead Gen Harder.

Inquiry-engine mode

The first screen states the business. Products follow buying decisions. Every page has a next step. Evidence opens. Forms notify. The CMS can change products.

It serves sales, marketing, and search. Details: visitor to inquiry and search compounding.

When budget is thin, do not build an empty hall of fame first. Cut phase one as an engine: fewer sections, real products, short path. How to hold cost: What a Corporate Website Costs and How Long It Takes. Templates often lock you in card structure. See template vs custom.

Franchise and export need a harder “system.” Policy must download and update: How Franchise Sites Should Explain Policy Clearly. An export homepage must take inquiries: What an Export Inquiry Homepage Should Say. Treating the site as a system also means sales forwards pages, not talk. DaXi’s first question: which step should the buyer finish on the site? If the answer is “just look,” we flag the card ceiling. If it is “leave contact,” the plan is built as a system.

The acceptance list decides which one you bought

A card list is usually: a few comps, it opens, the phone can change. An engine list is written as behavior: can a stranger find the right product in two minutes; can sales forward one page, not the whole site; who responds after submit, and how fast; who can add SKUs. Without those lines both sides feel “done,” and three months later sales still does not use it. Put the list in the contract. Cleaner than arguing “you did not get us leads” — leads still need sales follow-up and search. The site connects the path. See The Site Is Live. Why Are There Still No Inquiries.

Upgrading from a card need not happen in one shot. Add the product model and form first, then cases and downloads. Visual polish can wait for phase two. Closer to a system than spending first on a leader letter. Also keep this in mind

An engine also needs what happens after the lead: who replies within two weekday hours, weekend duty, how duplicates collapse. The site only lands that step. Sales management is next. Disconnect them and the system still “has no orders.” Set the duty roster at kickoff.

Engine homes are usually quieter: fewer animations, more facts, few clear buttons. Flashy is not lead gen. If the owner insists on a big video, do not cover the form and phone.

If phase-one budget only buys a card, still make phone and form tappable and write one business sentence. That is the smallest path toward a system.

An engine should also tell “saw a product” from “only saw home,” even via a hidden form field. Sales then knows which step they are on.

An engine Contact page should write hours and how to book a factory visit, so visitors do not expect 24-hour ecommerce chat. Expectation management is part of conversion.
