SimtoLink: Livestock tags report location and activity
An electronic ear tag is an individual livestock identifier based on RFID or a QR code. It gives each cow, sheep, pig, and similar animal a unique identity code for individual identification, health monitoring, breeding management, and agricultural-product traceability. Together with an electronic fence, it can form a smart livestock system of individual identification plus area control, and support compliance traceability such as organic certification and green certification.
Electronic ear tags include low-frequency RFID tags (125 kHz), UHF tags (860–960 MHz), and QR-code tags. Low-frequency tags have a short read range and strong interference resistance, and suit close-range inventory. UHF tags support bulk reading at a distance and suit fast identification in a race. QR-code tags cost less and need a manual scan. Some tags integrate sensors such as temperature, humidity, and motion to collect health data such as body temperature and activity, and upload it to the cloud over Wi-Fi, 4G, or LoRa.
Electronic ear tags are widely used for individual management, including estrus monitoring, breeding records, and calving or lambing traceability; health management, including abnormal-temperature alerts, disease traceability, and medication records; precision feeding, which allocates feed automatically from individual weight and growth stage; and traceability and certification, supporting agricultural-product traceability, organic certification, and HACCP, so a consumer can scan a code and see the full rearing process. Combined with an electronic fence, they can monitor animals crossing a boundary or going missing, and control grazing areas.
