Kandiantong: The H5 store opens without an app install

November 10, 2024 DaXi Technology

The cold-start logic of an H5 mall is clear: it does not depend on any platform's recommendation. People come from wherever the link is placed. That is its advantage—SMS, email, feed ads, communities, and offline QR codes can all point at the same mall. It is also its weakness—there is no platform traffic pool, and no low-cost retention action such as "follow." The user leaves after paying, and bringing them back depends on your own means. So an H5 cold start must solve two things at once: bring people in, and keep their contact details. This article gives workable channel tactics, retention design, and a 90-day rhythm.

Get the advertising prerequisites right first

Before spending money on traffic, three technical prerequisites must be met. Otherwise extra budget just leaks away.

First-screen speed: most H5 traffic comes from clicking a link, and patience is short. If the first screen takes more than 3 seconds, the bounce rate rises clearly. Before spending, measure first-screen time on real phones (including one low-end Android), and finish image compression, lazy loading, a CDN, and merging the first-screen requests.

Payment success rate: three channels (WeChat in-app JSAPI, WeChat out-of-app H5 payment, and Alipay mobile-website payment) must all be tested and pass, especially the outside-WeChat case. Users from SMS and ads are mostly in the system browser. If that path is broken, the spend is wasted.

The landing page must match the creative: price, gifts, and campaign time on the ad must match the landing page exactly. A mismatch can be rejected by the ad platform, and even if it passes it raises refunds and complaints.

Also unify the short-link domain and parameter rules in advance. Every external link carries channel parameters (source, campaign, and creative id), and they use the same short-link service. Then the admin can compare visits, order rate, and actual deals by channel, instead of seeing only one vague total of visits.

SMS recall

This is the channel where H5 has the most advantage, because a link in an SMS can be opened directly only by H5. Three efficient uses: wake old customers (segment by last purchase time, and give a stronger offer to those dormant for more than 90 days), attach a repeat-purchase entry to order and logistics notices, and remind members of birthday and holiday coupons.

Execution points: the signature must match the actual entity, marketing SMS must include a way to unsubscribe, and send times should avoid rest hours. Links use HTTPS and a domain that has completed filing. Unfiled links, or domains with a poor reputation, are easily blocked by carriers or clients. The copy should, within 70 characters, say who sent it, what is offered, how to use it, and when it ends. On cost, estimate 0.03–0.05 yuan per message. Recalling 10,000 messages costs about 300–500 yuan, a size that can be tested in small steps.

Fix the retention weakness

This is the part of an H5 cold start that needs the most careful design. Because native pushes such as WeChat subscription messages cannot be used, if the user leaves no reachable contact after ordering, you basically lose them.

Make the phone number the member's primary key: verify the phone number when ordering or claiming a coupon, and then you can reach them by SMS. This is the most reliable recall channel for H5. Guide them to follow an official account: put the official-account QR code on the payment-success page and give a clear reason (claim a coupon, check logistics, join membership). After they follow, you can use the account's subscription notices and broadcasts for low-cost reach. Guide them to add WeCom: this suits high-order-value categories that need consultation, maintained one-to-one by a sales associate. Guide them to add the site to the home screen or bookmark it: the effect is limited but the cost is zero, so it can be a supplement.

A reminder: collecting phone numbers requires a privacy policy and explicit authorization, and follows the minimum-necessary principle. Do not ask for information unrelated to the business just to retain people. That both violates the rules and lowers form completion.
